Don't Be a Fashion Faux Pas

If you're shopping online, finding the appropriate clothing for children that fits your child well and doesn't look too big or too small can be difficult. After all, you want your child to look their best as they go into school in the fall, not stand out like a sore thumb due to mismatched or ill-fitting clothes.

Kids' clothing sizes range from XS-XXL. Use our kids' clothing size chart and baby clothes size chart to determine the right fit for your child.

Children's Clothes Sizes

Children's clothes sizes are measured in inches and vary depending on the child's age. Toddler clothes are typically measured by weight, while children's clothing sizes are determined by height.

Most children aged 18 months to 8 years wear size 4-7, while children aged 8-14 wear size 7-14.

While busy parents consider baby clothing the same, some clothes are small enough for toddlers and older kids. However, baby clothes may not be right for toddlers or older kids and may result in a wardrobe full of mismatched items. Below are the sizing categories you will typically see:

  • Baby (Preemie, 0-24 months)

  • Toddler (2T-6T)

  • Little Kid (4-6X)

  • Big Kid or Tween (7-16)

  • Extended sizing (18-20)

How Do Children's Clothing Sizes Work?

The universal size is appropriate for children aged between 3-24 months. So, for example, if you're looking for clothes for your 18-month-old toddler, you should be shopping in the store's 3-24 month section.

Slim and husky sizing is also available. Slim sizing is for kids on the smaller end of the spectrum, while husky sizing is for kids on the larger end.

However, it is essential to note that girls' body proportions differ from boys, so make sure you buy the correct-sized baby clothing for each child based on their actual measurements!

How to Interpret Children's Clothing Sizes?

Universal children's clothing size ranges from newborn (0-3 months) to kids (12-14 years). Baby clothes size ranges from preemie or newborn up to 24 months. Kids' clothing size ranges from 2T, 3T, and 4T up to 12 and 14.

Proper clothing sizes vary widely between manufacturers, but the best rule of thumb is that kids' clothes are sized by age and child height. For example:

  • 2-year-olds usually wear 18-month clothes

  • 3-year-olds usually wear 24-month clothes

  • 5-year-olds usually wear 7/8th or 8/10th-grade sizes

To understand girls' and boys' clothes sizes, check out our baby clothes sizing charts below. You can also use these international conversion charts for infant baby clothing sizes.

How to Breakdown Children's Clothing Sizes?

As a general rule, babies' clothing is sized by age. For example, newborn clothing is sized NB (for newborns), infant clothing is sized by month (e.g., 0-3M), and toddler clothing is sized by age (e.g., 2T for two-year-olds).

Children's Clothing Sizes by Age

Nursery clothing typically ranges from newborn 0-3 months, 3-6 months, and 6-9 months. The most popular styles are onesies, pajamas, and jumpsuits.

Retailers will sometimes offer sizing based on age, while others will offer standard XS-XL sizing, which typically means:

  • XS – 4-5 years.

  • S – 6-7 years.

  • M – 8-9 years.

  • L – 10-11 years.

  • XL – 12-13 years.

Children's Clothing Size Charts

We understand that shopping for your children can be an overwhelming experience. Of course, you want them to look fashionable and feel comfortable in their clothes, but you also want their clothing to be safe and age-appropriate.

The big question is: what size is right for my child? The first step in finding the perfect fit is determining your child's height (in inches) by measuring from their head to the floor without shoes on. What Size Is 100 in Children's Clothes?

The scale for measuring children's clothing sizes differs from the one used for adults. Additionally, children's clothes are sized differently in different countries, so it's important to understand the relevant size chart conversion. The US size 100, for example, is equivalent to the European size 140 or the UK size 180.

For reference, the average height of a 10-year-old American girl ranges from about 3'7 (1.09 m) up to 4'2 (1.27 m).

Boys are typically taller on average than girls at these ages. Boys aged ten range in height between 3'9 and 4'5 (1.14-1.37 meters), while girls in this age range are between 2'11 and 3'5 (0.93-1.06 meters).

A child who is three feet tall and weighs fifty pounds will wear size 6 in America, but it would be roughly comparable to UK size 12 or French size 54.

Conversely, an eighteen-pound child would wear a US size 18, but it would be roughly similar to a French Size 38.

Children grow out of clothes quickly, so ensure you have enough clothes in your child's wardrobe that will last through all stages of their growth spurt.
